Genevieve enrolled in a prestigious Auckland school and when she received the rule book that prohibited her from walking on the grass she looked around for a different type of school. A foundation student of Senior College, Genevieve sat University Bursary in Year 12 in English, Chemistry, Mathematics with Statistics and Biology. The following year, she resat those subjects as well as Classics and History. Sitting six subjects was unusual for any student and yet she embraced the challenge and of course passed everything.
She entered the University of Auckland and completed a degree in Physiology, Science and Psychology. At the end of her second and third year, she went to America to be involved in Programme USA as a ski instructor in Vermont even though she could not ski. Genevieve made the decision not to do an Honours degree and instead stayed in the United States. She wanted to teach and gained a job working for the International Exchange Programme which she ended up running. In three years they went from 250 students to 500 students.
What came out of this was that she had a knack for marketing. It was difficult to do this in the New Zealand market because she did not have the qualifications. She went to work for the House of Travel in Marketing and Profit which was her worst job but the most defining. She was given a project to develop their website and had six weeks to create all 2500 pages of it. It happened.
Genevieve has always had a penchant for travel. At the end of the time working in travel, she went through Asia, Vietnam and China, then Europe and back to London where she applied for a job with Digital Marketing. “I didn’t want it and got told to take it and loved it,” she said. She learnt a lot.
This led to a Diploma in Digital Marketing. Now back in New Zealand with her husband, Nathan, whom she met at Senior College, being a mother has freed up time and opened up an opportunity to start her own business. Genevieve is building an accommodation review site based on New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. She has the domain started and has a company formed to develop the back end.
Genevieve is yet another Senior College student who has had the initiative to try new things and develop her own business. |
